Aviation Medicine

Aviation Medicine Department at Branch Health Clinic NAVSTA Norfolk conducts Flight Physical Examinations in a "2-Part" process to enhance efficiency, reduce administrative errors and reduce patient wait times.

Aviation Medicine Flight Physicals

  • Part 1, "Prelims": Part 1 consists of flight physical form pick-up, vitals, eye examination, blood work, EKG (if required), audiogram, and dental examination. Prelims will be completed by our patients on an individual basis.
  • Part 2, "Flight Surgeon Appointment": Following completion of "Part 1" and a thorough record review, appointments with the Flight Surgeon are scheduled by Aviation Medicine Department personnel at 757-953-8859 or through the individual squadron's Command Corpsman. Completion of a record review is an essential step in completing the patients Flight Physical Examination to ensure all test results are within Aeromedical standards as well as all waiver (if applicable) requirements are met in accordance with the Aeromedical Reference and Waiver Guidelines.

Aviation Medicine Sick Call

Aviation Medicine Department provides sick call service for non CAG aviation squadron personnel aboard NAVSTA Norfolk. Patients who present with injury, illness, or emergent conditions beyond the capabilities of Aviation Medicine Department will be stabilized and referred to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.

Routine Appointments

Routine appointments are scheduled by calling Aviation Medicine Department at 757-953-8859 or by contacting your individual squadron's Command Corpsman.

Flight Physical Appointments

Flight Physical appointments are scheduled once a record review is completed by calling Aviation Medicine Department at 757-953-8859. Service members attached to squadrons will conduct the record review with their Corpsmen.

Monday–Friday 6:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. 
Aviation Medicine Department closes at 12 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month due to departmental training.

Sick Call

  • Morning sick call is conducted Monday–Friday from 6:45 a.m. to 7:15 p.m.
  • Afternoon sick call is conducted Monday–Friday from 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. except for closure on 2nd and 4th Thursday due to Training. Members may also use the Nurse Advice Line. Call 1-800-TRICARE (874- 2273), Option 1. The Nurse Advice Line is available to all TRICARE beneficiaries in the U.S., except those enrolled in US Family Health Plan.

Prelims (Vitals, Eye Examination, EKG)

MondayFriday 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
If you wear glasses, please make sure to bring your glasses with you. For contact lens wearers, please remove your contact lenses 24 hours prior to the exam and bring your glasses with you.

Record Review

MondayFriday 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Record review MUST be completed prior to scheduling an appointment with the Flight Surgeon. Members may drop off their records early to have it reviewed during the time slot. Record reviews can take up to 30 minutes or more depending on the situation; please plan accordingly. When the record review is complete, you will be called to schedule an appointment with the Flight Surgeon.

Flight Deck Physicals

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday - 78 a.m. 
If you have 5 or more personnel that require flight deck physicals, the unit MUST send a medical representative to assist in the completion of their flight deck examination.
