Pest Surveillance

The Preventive Medicine Department, Branch Health Clinic, Naval Station, Norfolk provides comprehensive pest surveillance and control recommendations to commands onboard Naval Station, Norfolk, CINCLANTFLT compound and Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, VA.

If necessary, the application of pesticides, trapping or pest specific control measures is coordinated with the Environmental Services Branch, Navy Public Works Department.

The local area has a variety of pests that can be a nuisance, and in some cases, can be dangerous to not only the service member, but to his/her family. Know who to contact if a stray animal shows up.

Mosquito Control

The Preventive Medicine Department routinely monitors the mosquito population onboard Naval Station, Norfolk and directs control measures with Environmental Services, Navy Public Works Center. Control measures involve environmental controls, application of larvacides or area wide spraying.

Area commands must make every effort to ensure that their area is free of standing water that promotes mosquito breeding. The following checklist should be routinely used by both commands and concerned citizens:

Backyard Checklist

  • Remove water holding containers such as old tires, tin cans, buckets, drums, and bottles.
  • Cover trash containers to exclude rain water.
  • Clean clogged roof gutters and drain flat roofs.
  • Empty wading pools at least once a week and store indoors when not in use.
  • Properly care for backyard pools; schedule proper maintenance while on vacation.
  • Change the water in bird baths and fountains at least once a week.
  • Consider stocking ornamental pools with fish.
  • Fill in or drain low areas in yards to discourage puddles.
  • Keep drains, ditches, and culverts clean of weeds and trash to allow proper drainage.
  • Repair leaky outdoor faucets and pipes.
  • Trim shrubs and trees to discourage mosquitoes from resting on foliage.
