NMCP Mammography Clinic Earns Reaccreditation

By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Ariana Torman

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (December 2, 2021) – Naval Medical Center Portsmouth’s (NMCP) Mammography clinic received reaccreditation, Nov. 17.

The Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) requires all U.S. mammography facilities to be accredited. The American College of Radiology Mammography Accreditation Program provides peer review, constructive feedback on staff qualifications, equipment, quality control, quality assurance, image quality, and radiation dose.

“We average around 13,000 screening and diagnostic mammograms per year” said Cmdr. Jessica Miller, NMCP’s former Mammography Clinic department head. “Accreditation ensures patients are receiving well positioned, quality mammograms. This ensures we are providing the same quality at NMCP and all outlying clinics.”

Every mammography machine must undergo ACR accreditation and this process occurs every three years at NMCP clinics and branch health clinics. There is also the possibility of unannounced spot inspections.

NMCP offers walk-in mammography during regular business hours as well as scheduled screening mammography in the evening. Additionally, Branch Health Clinic Norfolk is able to normally accommodate same day and next day screening exams.

Miller added that she would recommend her mother, sister, and all family members to be seen at NMCP’s clinics. “Covid-19 delayed screening care for many women and I would highly encourage all women who are due for screening or have a breast complaint to come in for evaluation.”

As the U.S. Navy's oldest, continuously-operating military hospital since 1830, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth proudly serves past and present military members and their families. The nationally-acclaimed, state-of-the-art medical center, along with the area's 10 branch health and TRICARE Prime Clinics, provide care for the Hampton Roads area. The medical center also supports premier research and teaching programs designed to prepare new doctors, nurses and hospital corpsman for future roles in healing and wellness.
