NMCP Anesthesiology Conducts Task Training

PORTSMOUTH, Virg. — PORTSMOUTH, Va. (April 5, 2022) –Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) Anesthesia Department, in coordination with the Healthcare Simulation and Bioskills Training Center (HSBTC or SIM Center), conducted high-frequency task training, April 5.

NMCP GOATS GIVE BACK

PORTSMOUTH, Virg. — PORTSMOUTH, Va. (April 4, 2022) – Navy Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) Chief Petty Officers Association (CPOA) members met at the Fisher House on Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads-Portsmouth Annex to volunteer their time to perform some beautification activities around the building, March 31.

PATIENT SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK HIGHLIGHTED AT NMCP

PORTSMOUTH, Virg. — PORTSMOUTH, Va. (March 16, 2022) Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) hosted a patient appreciation and education event in honor of Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 16.

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) Healthcare Simulation and Bioskills Training Center (HSBTC or SIM Center) held a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, including Computer Science (STEM/CS) event for Portsmouth School System (PSS) high school students, Feb. 24. Nineteen 10th to 12th grade students and two teachers from Portsmouth’s Manor, Churchland, and I.C. Norcom high schools visited the SIM Center to see demonstrations on the simulation medical training that is done at NMCP.

STEM EVENT FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HELD AT NMCP

PORTSMOUTH, Virg. — NMCP has signed an Education Partnership Agreement with PSS for mentorship of high school students to medical simulation, and the command’s diversity committee was instrumental in coordinating the event.

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) hosted an Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET+) course, Feb. 1-2. ASSET+ is an upgraded modification of the original ASSET course, and it is a cadaver-based, anatomical review of surgical exposures in the neck, torso and extremities to allow for rapid control of bleeding in injured patients. “As NMCP becomes a trauma center, all of our surgeons will be expected to manage trauma although most are not specifically trained in trauma surgery,” said Cmdr. Timothy Donahue, NMCP’s Trauma Medical director. “Just as every Marine is a rifleman,” added Donahue, “every deployed Navy surgeon is a trauma surgeon.”

NMCP HOSTS TRAUMA ASSET+ COURSE

PORTSMOUTH, Virg. — PORTSMOUTH, Va. (Feb. 9, 2022) –Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) hosted an Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET+) course, Feb. 1-2.

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) recently earned the Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR®) Strong designation by the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI). PORTSMOUTH, Virg. — Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) recently earned the Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR®) Strong designation by the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI).

NMCP NAVY NURSE RECEIVES DAISY AWARD

PORTSMOUTH, VA — Ensign Mary Jane Tran, a Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) charge nurse assigned to the Mother Baby Unit, was surprised by being presented with the DAISY Award during a ceremony, Jan. 31.

In honor of National Blood Donor Month, Capt. (Ret.) Evin Thompson makes his 94th donation to the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) Blood Bank, Jan. 7. Thompson, who served 35 years in the U.S. Navy, believes that by donating blood he is continuing his service by giving back. “Throughout my career I was involved in many situations where blood was needed and there was always a supply,” said Thompson. “That supply had to come from people who donated. It only takes a couple hours of my time and that’s nothing compared to what this country and the Navy gave to me.” If you would like to donate blood, stop by NMCP’s Blood Drive, Monday, Jan. 10, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Building 2, ground floor, lobby. Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Petty Officer Nathaniel Bennet and Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Petty Officer Taylor Scott were given the NAMs by Capt. Shelley Perkins, NMCP’s commanding officer, Jan. 7.
